Endometrial ablation is an effective alternative to a hysterectomy for women suffering from heavy or prolonged bleeding during their period.

Endometrial ablation is a procedure in which we use a hysteroscope, a small camera used to view the inside of the uterus, and other specialized instruments to effectively remove the lining of the uterus that is the cause of the bleeding.

The procedure can be done on an outpatient basis, allowing you to go home several hours after the operation instead of an extended hospital stay. The endometrial ablation itself takes approximately 30-60 minutes, once the anesthetic has taken effect. After the procedure you will be taken to the recovery room where you will have time to rest, and after the doctor's evaluation, you will be allowed to go home... usually a few hours after the operation is finished.

Usually you will be advised to avoid sexual intercourse for one week to ensure you are healing properly. A follow-up office visit, two weeks after the procedure, will be necessary to make sure your body has recovered completely.
